Demo: "Ugliest of The Bunch"
Recorded in 2015, intended for Hypochondriac. Never got used.
It’s obvious that I had gone through a breakup right before we made our third record. Thats obvious right? I’m whining like a little baby for the entire album. But you know what? I’m whining in key, baby!!
This demo is one of the few songs that did not get used on Hypochondriac and it was made during a period when I was obsessed with layering orchestral sounds over these poppy little breakup songs. I was really deep into my Beach Boys obsession at the time and I had a lot of fun playing with an electric piano on the flutes, French horn, and brass settings.
What a dork.
I felt, at the time, that the addition of an orchestra made every song better. I now know, that is not true in the slightest, but it makes for a fun demo recording process. I think you can learn something when you do that, actually. You can throw a bunch of bullshit on a song and see what it could be if you went wild. Then after going down the rabbit hole for hours, days, or even weeks, you take all that shit away and you might have a new perspective when listening to the song at its minimal form, after you built it up. It means more to you, as a song, and you don’t feel the need to give it this grand composition. I think the industry term for this phenomenon is “demo-itis”.
This song is another whiny, little tune about heartbreak. Nothing special, but I think you’ll enjoy it. After all, if you’re reading this now, you’ve probably enjoyed listening to me piss and moan for all these years.
Me? I’m done with that shit.
